White Faced Capuchin Monkey feeding Grasshoper
by Cay-Uwe Kulzer
One of the things I like about digital SLRs is the flexibility they offer. I encountered a group of capuchin monkies in the jungle of the Manuel Anonio NP in Costa Rica. As one can image the light conditions are not the best to photograph. I started using fill in flash for the images I was making, but when controlling them at the monitor, I found that they were looking a bit unnatural, especially because of the harsh light created by the direct light of the flash. I decided to go for ASA800 with my camera, to be able to photograph without the flash. That of course is also challenging since one has to use wide open apertures, longer exposure times. In my case at F4 the exposure time was something about 1/60s. One needs to work carefully to get sharp images... Even so, the results were looking better in my opinion and I was able to run a long photograph session of the monkies. Finally I was rewarded, at the time were the dominat male decided to go to a brighter location. The monkies were looking for food, and "The Boss" found something nice on the menu...
