Black-and-white Warbler

Here a Black-and-white singing on territory this morning at Scioto Trail State Forest in Ross County, Ohio. I did have my flash set up, but when he started to sing I fired as many frames as possible while his mouth was open, and the flash couldn't recycle fast enough for all of them even with my Quantum Turbo. This is the frame with the sharpest bills, but the flash didn't fire here. The ones with flash don't look a whole lot different, though.

The Black and White is one of my favorite warblers and this guy is singing his heart out! You captured the perfect instant. I don't see anything that would have been improved with the flash. This is great as is! Good job!

WOW, this is really, really really, really, really, really, really nice. The perch is great and I really (really) like the complimentary background color. You caught the open bill just right as well.

Simply gorgeous Bob! Jim Z. pretty much summed this up with these few words, "Awsome shot Bob!"
Having the tail on the open side of the perch and catching this one with the bill open so wide, add so much for me.

A very clean look at this nice warbler. I'd like to see one of the frames with fill to compare the effects - can you provide a link to one?

Thanks for all the comments!

Malcom, this was with ISO200 at 1/250 sec at f5.6.

Richard, I said the effects of the flash were negligible, and they are. It wouldn't be worth posting both side by side since the processing of the RAW files were a bit different. With a slide you'd see a bigger difference between the two, and because of the overcast, neither would look very good with film.

I'll ditto what everyone else has said, including the sentiment that warbler photography doesn't get any better than this, at least not in any way I can visualize.

What is the BG by the way?

Bob, you did a great job on this. I like it more with natural light.
The flash almost always brings a second disturbing catch light in the eyes, which
makes an image look artificial, IMHO.

Mike, the background is distant leafless trees in an oak/hickory forest.
