British Soldiers Lichen (Cladonia cristatela)

I made this image in a pine forest on Indian Pond Mountain near Orford, NH. I think the pine needles give you a good clue as to the size of these little guys.

Nikon D2x, Nikkor 24-85 at 85mm 1/10s F/11, ISO-100; Exposure bias -0.33; Tripod

I have never heard these called British soldiers - but it sure fits! A lovely image, perfectly suited to the theme of the week.

Fascinating lichens. Very sharp. The comp and contrast is very nice.

Reminds me of Holidays. I could see this as a Christmas card cover. Nice color contrast.
