The story behind the photo:
I was writing an article on bear researcher Terry DeBruyn, who was doing a study in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Terry invited me to go along during winter den work to get some photos. Terry located the mother via radio collar and then put the mom out with a mild tranquilizer (from the end of a stick). While in the den, Terry suddenly brings this cub out and hands it to me to put inside my coat while he did some vitals on the mother. This little guy was shaking and cold and clung to me with his perfectly formed claws. A photo was snapped of me holding the cub. One of the great moments I've had as a outdoor writer/photographer. If you're interested, Amazon has his book on their site, "Walking With Bears". I was fortunate enough to have a couple photos in the book, including the back cover flap photo of Terry weighing a cub inside his Michigan Tech hat. Anyway, that's the story.

Steve, nice to meet you - and what a fantastic opportunity to get so close to wild bears!
