Golden Cove

The theatrical light of a passing storm at the end of a long summers day paints the sandstone edifice with brilliant golden light. The cobbled stones each as big as baseballs are barely grazed by the direct light of the setting sun but never-the-less pick up the soft reflected light off the rocks tinging them in soft gold. It all looks astonishingly good with a dark brooding sky behind.

Sure is purty!!! Sort of like Utah meets California. Did you add any red color saturation to the top?

Neat image.

the light, shapes and colors are great. I do wish I could follow the water around the left and into the background. Do you have a version like that because I feel like I remember seeing one?

I have a few versions of this particular shot where the light was even more astonishing. This is past its peak and after a particularly vicious hail storm battered me. It is much more within the capabilities of the film than some of the others i took being softer light. No red added some orange light was striking the underside of the clouds this become more apparent later.

Man, I'm just mesmerized by the foreground rocks and how they trail off into the water! I think they steal the show from the BG rock formation but that's just one woman's opinion.

The light and colors you captured here are fantastic. I'm not sure the composition is as stunning as your usual stuff, but it is quite nice and I'm not sure if it could be better. Good stuff as usual.

Ian, fantastic, perfectly lit, well balanced and interesting image. Not a single tiny nit at all! It seems worth getting pelted with hail. Nice to see another 67ii shooter! I've had mine a year and love it - best bang for the buck photo purchase I've made. I love the 45mm lens as well.

Ian, an absolutely gorgeous image. I really like the contrast between the round stones in the foreground and the straight lines in the rocks in the background. Spectacular light as well. A wonderful image.

Exquiste lighting. The tonal palette seems quite different to your other photos of this area. The dark sky sets it all off beautifully.

Ian, this is superb. perfect comp and the right light to make this a masterpiece. Joe Cornish would love to have this one in his files...
As Verena will be photographing the scottish coastline and Isles this July, we would be very curious to know, where it was taken...?
Hope you enjoyed Happy Feet, it's one funny movie, and watched it twice on the flight back from NZ!

Hi Verena, George summer isn't the best of seasons to photograph Scotland in general but fortunately the Moray coast where this shot was taken is ideal. Cove bay is about 2 miles east of Hopeman below the golf course. The whole Moray coast is pretty good but Hopeman and the nearby area is very productive. Happy Feet was great.

Thank you Julian. George, I reckon the best time to visit the Orkney's and Shetland is end of June and into July make sure you visit Hoy and Rackwick Bay it is purpose designed for 5x4 photographers with their shift tilt mechanisms (not jealous). The cliff tops at Shetland and in particular Orkney are a world class venue for photographing Puffins you can sit there with a wide angle lens and fill a frame with these characters assuming you can actually focus your lens close enough!! The bird life is hostile though stray into territorial areas occupied by terns and you will find your head drilled with needle sharp beaks. By the way the sun barely sets at this time of year. Shetland has a midnight golf tournament.

Ian,

This light is spectacular, out of this world! Wow!

Besides the fantastic contrast between the illuminated edifice and the dark sky, what really stand out here is the warm light on the rocks.

Excellent!

Christoph
