It was a night boat trip during our visit to Kinabatangan Jungle, Malaysia. Condition was extremely challenging as it was dark and we were riding on a rocking boat. Photo only resized.

D2x 600mm 1/250 f4 iso400 fill flash

C&C are welcome

A very, very nice photo (made even better by the constraints you've listed) of a bird I've never head of, let alone seen.

Nicely done! !

Beautiful capture, the plumage is very well displayed and the BG is great. Those eyes look a little too bright, probably from the fill flash. My attention whats to fixate on them like a deer looking at a cars headlights. Is there any way of toning them down. Considering the description of what you were facing to get this shot you did pretty good. :toast:

Had to have been a tough shot to get under those conditions and with the focal length you used. The eyes are a definate draw almost to a fault. If they could be toned down slightly it might help balance the image. Other than that I thinks it's a nice shot.

Oh, wow, a Buffy Fish Owl! I am turning green before my screen, Anthony! I'd love to hear more about how you found it in the dark. It's pupil size makes me think there must have been a lantern used to pre-focus. Sounds like a very exciting experience. Great shot!

thanks for the comments and I can say this is one of my unforgetable experience.
Terry : the boatman used a lamp powered by boat motor generator to spot the birds.

The exif should be 1/200 sec to be exact.

Cheers,

Anthony

p.s. I shoot raw and the unedited photo is here for your reference.
