Fern and Leaf

Gallery: FloraPosted October 30, 20062,535 views19 comments
I seldom post in the Flora forum, but I couldn't pass by this fern and leaf without trying to capture it. Shooting this reminded me why I don't post here more often. Boy, it's tough shooting these small scenes! Every time I try I find a new-found admiration for people who shoot this stuff!. Anyway, here's by effort.

D2X w/70-300 @ 122mm
1/6 sec. @ f/11 - mirror up and mc-30 remote release
400 ISO - (I messed up - I was walking back to camp after trying to catch a flock of turkey's and hadn't switched back to 100 ISO)
No filters
Tripod
C1 LE RAW Conversion, PSCS2, Marc's sharpening

Critiques, suggestions, and comments always welcomed and greatly appreciated. Thanks for looking.

Excellent on many levels -- composition, color, and focus. I also like the sense of a rich woodland with a nice mix of species. :toast:

I hate it when I forget to switch my ISO back Bill. Except the last time I did it, I shot at ISO 800...

This is a very nice effort, especially where you say you do not do it often. The shot is very nice, I love all of the different shapes, colors, and textures. Nice...nice.

I've done the ISO thing too, and always want to kick myself. I left it on ISO 640 once, and captured what has turned out to be one of my favoite images. I have not tried to blow it up big, but I think it turned out OK. (That was with my 6 mp D70 too). I love this image...very well composed with beautiful fall colors. Well done!

Looks great-crisp color and detail.
What's worse is when you're at ISO 100 and Turkeys or deer show up and you forget and end up with a 1/2 sec blurred image.

Bill: This is very nice. At first glance I thought it was one of Mike Moats' shots. My only nit is the yellow ULC. I would like a lot more of that leaf or none at all. The color contrast and the leaf litter BG is great. >=))>

This is an excellent image. The texture and colors work well in this classic Autumn sampler.

I love the depth and great clarity of this shot. All the colors seem perfect, vibrant and real. And the fern provides such contrast as it seems almost fresh and new compared to all the decaying leaves. Very appealing.

Great clarity, detail and colors. Congrats on the EP - well deserved. Was there any gardening involved?

Wow, I didn't realize I won an EP until I read your comments Marsel. As for gardening, there was none. I was just walking by and noticed it. Every time I've tried to "arrange" a natural setting you can tell it immediately so I've given up on that. God gets the credit for the arrangement.

Bill: Congratulations on the EP. This type of image always is fresh and new, especially with a great composition, color and texture have combined to make a complete study of fall foliage.
