Marbled Frogmouth Podargus ocellatus marmoratus

Another image of the Marbled Frogmouth a rare frogmouth, this race is found only in lowland tropical rainforest on the remote Cape York Peninsula, it's nocturnal and reportedly won't come out from under the rainforest canopy. As a consequence it is rarely seen. This one was called in to a track in the rainforest in Iron Range NP. The call is something else, a long gobble followed by a bill clap.

Taken with a Canon T90 + 500mm f4.5L + 25mm Extension tube with 300TL and better beamer. Taken a couple of hours after sunset, with 100% flash illumination. Flash metered by FEL spot metering and SS shifted manually. 1/90 @ f4.5 on Reala. Red eye cleaned up in PS.

Wonderful shot Chris, and what a VERY strange looking bird.

Very well done for going that extra mile to capture an obviously very elusive bird, and getting such a fine result.

Marvelous nocturnal shot! Just getting the focus right at night is a major accomplishment. Very well done!

beautiful night-time shot. great composition, not overflashed in the least, nice sharpness. great all around work and the rarity of the species makes it exceptional.

Hi Chris!

How close you got this bird with calling? Did you play back the recorded call?

Australia rules, I've got several CD-s with Australian nature sounds (Listening Earth series) and this is just fantastic. Wish I could be there someday...

Excellent! I've been fascinated by frogmouths since I saw a pair of Tawny's at the Philadelphia zoo 20 or so years ago.

Chris,

I have seldom felt this much jealousy and envy, not least because I know how much "better" is this bird than Tawny. And it's a just plain great photo regardless.

Thanks to Bob and Garth , for choosing my shot for the editor's pick, I had a great time around the area where I took the image and it was a real treat to find let alone photograph these birds.
