Sheer blind luck. I was photographing the excellent cloud formation, and got a "bolt from the blue".
Nikon F5, Nikkor 24-110 at about 110, 1/100th, Kodak Ektachrome 200, manual focus.

Luck seems to be a common theme on the lightning postings so far. Excellent work here!

Not luck, but preparation and skill! Excellent capture (both the clouds & the bolt). My only nit would be the unlevel horizon. Very powerful image.

Fabulous. One of the coolest lightning shot I've seen.

Sensational!
You not only got the lightning bolt, but the cloud is spectacular.

The horizon is dead level. The slope you see is the contour of the land in the middle foreground. The thing to look at is the cloud immediately above the land contour -- which is level (I measured it).

Beautiful shot!! I like the comments about being prepared. You have to be at the right place at the right time AND be prepared. And YOU were! Congrats on the EP!!

Fantastic shot at a fortunate moment! It would still be a wonderful image without the bolt! As for the horizon and whether it is level, what is this "contour of the land" of which you speak? I am living in Central Illinois and that doesn't happen here... LOL!

Luck or not, gorgeous shot. Love the clouds but the lightning really makes this shot.
