Quiet afternoon in the Marsh

I shot this on a quiet winter's afternoon in the marsh. It was actually Christmas Eve afternoon, and I had escaped the madness at my house for a couple of hours in an effort to retain what little sanity I had left.

D2x w/18-35 @ 21mm.
.4 sec @ f/16 mirror up and mc-30 remote release
100 ISO
Polarizer
Tripod
C1 LE RAW Conversion, PSCS2, BW conversion using Hue/Sat method, PK Sharpener

Critiques, suggestions, and comments always welcome and greatly appreciated. Thanks for looking.

This is wonderful, Bill. I love the B&W treatment. The river curving is wonderful to lead the eye into the image and I like the sky included in this with the reflections as well. The shoreline on the right adds a nice curve to the image. Nicely captured.

Never been a big fan of Christmas either. Thanksfully my wife is understanding enough that she only makes me do it every other year. In between, if the weather is decent, it's usually some of the best time to be out.
But anyway... I really like the quiet mood in this image. The range of tones and smooth transitions are wonderful and soothing to the eye.

Hi Guy - Actually I love Christmas (I despise the commercialism!), but my wife had a Christmas Eve Brunch that morning that included our 4 kids, our daughter in law, son in law, our 3 grandbabies, our son in law's parents (and their 2 dogs), my sister in law, her husband, their 2 kids and daughter in law, Uncle Don, and a lady down the street without family, so my innate anti-social nature had been strained to the limit by the afternoon. As you, I'm very fortunate in that my wife understands my need to get out and get a breath of fresh air and to be alone!

Captivating! The trees look almost orderly against the plain sky. Reflection adds a great feel, the stillness of the water is conveyed well. Excellent work!

Great scene. Really like the B&W conversion. Image has great lines, tones and a killer reflection. The curves in the sandy shoreline adds a lot.

Very nice Bill! I love everything about this. The shapes and detail of the trees is so much more interesting to me in the winter. Thanks for posting!

There is great detail throughout this shot Bill; in the grass, in the shore on the right, in the trees. Nice treatment.

Bill - I agree with you about the shapes of trees in winter, but in this case winter had nothing to do with the bare nature of the trees. 99% of the trees shown are pine trees, and would usually be full of needles regardless of season. These are bare due to Hurricane Dennis earlier in the season. These trees were completely stripped of needles - you can see where some trees are returning to normal, others will probably end up dying. This little marsh is only about a 1/4 mile from the Gulf of Mexico. Thanks for your comments.

Bill, I love the peaceful feeling the I get when looking at this photo and I think that the BW conversion adds to that feeling. I also think the "ripples" in the sand on the shore are cool! :toast:

I'm not a big B&W fan, but it works very well here. Interesting about the trees. I noticed that in the eastern part of NC after hurricanes, they will all be brown. The salt water combined with the wind I guess. I like the lines on the shoreline at right.

Hi Alice - you're right about them being brown - these were, and still are brown for the most part, but seem to be coming back. These trees have seen many hurricanes over the years, but have suffered two major storms back to back in 2004 & 2005 so they're probably a bit tired of it all. I know I am!!

Bill, while the scenery isn't doing a whole lot for me - it's rather commonplace (though nicely composed) and lacks an element of excitement or intrigue. I am feeling you did your best to capture it. Excellent conversion work too. In short, it's not one of my favs of yours, but still pleasant to look at.
