Hawfinch 'male'
by David Kjaer
This one's for Ed who when I posted the female said, 'if that's the female the male must be a snappy dresser' As you can see Ed he's the same basic colours only a bit richer.
Taken at a winter feeding station in March in the Forest of Dean, England using a hide/blind.
Canon 1V + 500f4 on Provia 100F and scanned on a Nikon Coolscan and processed in PS CS

28 commentsEd is in Florida this week, and may not have internet access. He'll be home Friday, so don't be concerned that he doesn't comment right away. I'm going to see him Saturday and will make sure he knows about this.

Yes, you are right they are fairly scarce in the UK, but there are quite good numbers in the New Forest and the Forest of Dean where this was taken. Even then they are difficult to tie down and in the 4 years I tried to entice these guys to my winter feeding station it only really worked during March, 2002 and boy did it work! On one occasion I counted 47 on the ground within approx 25 feet of the hide/blind and a local ranger who was watching from some way behind me said there was in excess of 70 birds. Would love to do it all again on digital.

Am posting this reply from my hotel in Fort Myers, Florida where we've been freezing (literally) until this afternoon but the bird photography has been great!
I thought Florida was meant to be warm all year round - look forward to seeing your week's work on the forum!
