January Sun

The days are definitely getting longer, but things always look colder when the sun goes behind the clouds.....
Lakes and rivers seem to be alternating between frozen and open; this slow-moving section of river had ice along the edges.

20D, 1/500 sec, f22, Tokina 12-24 at 24 mm, handheld, cropped off top and bottom, saturation, curves, shadow/highlight,USM.

Is the sun too blown out in this? I only had a chance to get one shot of this spot; I wish I could have set up the tripod and bracketed it.

Anne, the sun is a bit hot....but not too bad. I think a lot of what makes it seem so bright is the contrast between the rest of the scene. I've seen worse called acceptable.

I like this one very much. The mirror-like reflection gives the river a metallic look.

Not too hot for me Anne. I like it a lot. This feels cold and as Todd said 'Magical'.

Agree with the other comments, Anne...this is wonderful. The hot spot is not distracting at all. Love the coldness it projects. I like the reflection also.

Very realistic! I think I´ve seen this kind of weather too much in my short life.

Burrrrrrrr! Very nice! I wish we'd get some snow without the 60mph winds!

Ooh Anne almost monochomatic heaven, glorious shot, wonderfully delicate levels of contrast that suit this shot perfectly.

Sweet shot Anne. I love how the light part of the sky is echoed by the snow in the FG. This brings back memories of the Tanana. Feels like x-country skiing during the few hours of mid-day light.

Beautiful Anne. The sun's a tad hot but not enough to distract. The trees, the perfect reflection, the icey rim, and a wonderful sense of depth make this really nice. Really, really nice!

Anne,

Just stunning. The sun does not seem to bright to me. I don't think you needed to bracket, its perfect as is. And hey its with a 20D, can't you "bracket" in RAW processing?

Beautiful scene excellent composition. The stream mirrors the sky both in reflection and shape (due to your choice of angle). Good job handling the broad dynamic range -- but there are compromises in the lighting, I wonder if a ND filter would have helped? In any case a beautiful image!

Fantastic image, Anne. Its one of the best landscape photos I have seen in ESS in a long time. Congratulations on the Editor's Pick.

I would have missed this if not for the EP announcement.

Very nice Ann, love the composition. Did you shoot this photo in RAW, if yes your may want to try creating two or three different exposures then blending them in PS. Congradulation on your Editors pick.

Cheers,

Wow! Thanks for the comments, everyone. I was absolutely blown away that this got the EP! There are so many outstanding images on here, sometimes I hesitate to post anything...
For those who asked, yes I shot this in RAW, and I did quite a bit of changing to it, between the RAW settings, and the curves and shadow/highlight, to get this. But, I think I'll probably do some more work on it.

I like this very much. The sun is a little "hot",but doesn't hurt the photo at all. I love the moody effect. Makes you almost feel the cold. Would make a great wall hanging in my living room. :toast: :toast: :toast: :toast: :toast: :toast: :toast:
