This shot was taken on todays date a few years but is still my favorite ruffed grouse photo. I bumped into this guy as I was running back to my car for more film when I was photographing a mule deer buck in waterton Lakes N.P.

A beautiful shot! :toast:

Any chance it's a female spruce grouse? There are only ruffed in my region, and something looks different in your photo that I can't quite figure out.

Not a spruce grouse. The difference is the crest is not raised. I very recently had an editor (also from eastern Canada, ) question whether it was a ruffie or not and refuse to use it for that reason.

VERY nice! :toast: Lots of excellent things in this image, compostion, lighting, background, etc., but for me it's a great example of why I need to down to eye-level with the bird. Thanks!
