Winter Shadows #7 - Haunted Forest, Too

by Kent Newton

When I posted Winter Shadows #2 - The Haunted Forest, several people mentioned they would like to see a version with more trunks visible and a broader dark band at the top of the frame.

This is that version.

Thanks for looking. Comments and critiques appreciated.

Kent, the B&W treatment really does this photo justice. Love the comp, the footprints, the texture in the snow and the graduation to deep shadow at the bottom of the frame.

I really like the effect here with the shadows coming directly at the viewer. The texture in the FG snow is nice also. Not too sure about the tracks along the left of the frame though...I find them to be a little distracting although I'm sure you had a good reason to include them.

Nice image. However, I like it better without the tracks.

I wouldn't touch a thing! Delicious artwork. One of my favorite images of the year on this site.

I agree with Joe on this one, the shadow seems to have a life of it's own, and this darker redition really adds to that effect. I like the whole series but this is my favorite, well done. Tim

Kent,

I think the more prominent dark band looks good. I also think the increased contrast has helped the image overall. You mentioned in a reply to comments about #2 that you were worried about losing detail in the snow. I think any blanching of the snow that may have happened is actually a plus because it plays into the dark "hand shadow" mood of the image. Nice work.

Great picture! Misterious & a lot of athmosphere.

And I like it better than the original one...

Great picture! I wouldn't change anything, maybe the bottom is too dark ...

Kent,

great picture. I am struggling a bit if the footprints are good or not, but anyhow the first impression is that I like the image. The main reason for liking it are the silhuottes created by the shade of the trees and that incontrst to the snow. That works very well for me.

Thanks for the comments, all.

Two points.

First, this is not the same image as the original with a different crop and treatment. It is a different exposure entirely. That accounts a bit for the slightly darker shadows, etc.

Second, I had a very good reason for including the tracks: they were there. I couldn't get the shot I wanted (i.e., the shadow directly in the middle of the frame), without including them. While they are a bit distracting coming into and then out of the frame, I think they do add a bit of mystery to the image. I hadn't thought of it before, but I could try to clone them out. I may give that a try.

Thanks again for the comments.

Kent, I am really enjoying your series. This may be my favorite also, and I for one like the tracks or foot prints. Good Job! :toast:

Have not had a chance to comment on this series of shot but would just like to say they are real nice. This one would have to be my fav.
