Jumping spider

Canon 10D, Sigma 180+1.4x+36mm tubes, Gitzo
ISO 100, 1/200s, f/16, 550EX+diffuser
Rotated to level and cropped all around
Captive/controlled

This is a male Synemosyna formica. I've seen only a few of them in my backyard and they're a real treat to find. They typically hang out on the leaves of small trees and shrubs and are VERY active. Easily the most difficult jumper I've photographed this year, and almost as difficult as any warbler!

Comments/suggestions are always welcome, and thanks for viewing!

Looks like its on a high dive waiting to jump. Nice capture of a very tough subject.

Great shot, Jay!I don't believe I've seen one of these (that I know of).
I really like the spider's posture here...he definitely appears to be in hunting mode!

Jay,

Nice image! The smooth background looks great and makes this guy pop in the frame. At first glance I didn't like the high placement of the spider in the frame. But it does sort of give the image a feel of the spider overlooking his domain and ready to pounce on unsuspecting prey.

Stunning shot Jay! Out of curiosity, is S. formica one of those ant mimicing jumpers? In other words, is there a local ant species that resembles them in the least? It looks remarkably like an ant and is similar to other mimics I've seen in the tropics. With a species name of formica, it only make sense as well. It'd be interesting to try and capture both at the same time if there is any truth to this. Let me know. :toast:
