Mother's Love

I was down at Ridgefield NWR yesterday and took a walk on the Kiwa trail.  While walking through a wooded area, tring to spot any owls, I came across this family.  This was pretty much the way I found them at first, but the mother came around them and moved forward to make sure I wasn't going to mess with her youngsters (highly unlikely given all the Himalayan Blackberries between us).  It was a heavily overcast morning and quite dark in the woods, but I decided to try anyhow.  Out of something over 200 frames, I got half a dozen acceptably sharp ones spaced out to pretty much show the sequence of events- I love digital!

7Dii, Sigma 150-600 C @ 451 mm, hand held, f/8, 1/25 sec, iso 3200, aperture priority, pattern metering.  Processed in LR & PS CC with Neat Image for noise reduction.  Cropped to 13.4 MP.  Taken yesterday at 8:00 am.

Love this family portrait in a nice natural setting.  The story makes it even better.

What a great family portrait, Dennis!  They all 3 just posed so nicely for you.  I can image though, how difficult it must have been, with them so dark, and the lighting in the woods not so good.  Yes, digital is wonderful.  We can click off as many as we want or need, with no worry of film processing.  That was a steady hand you had to hold it at 1/25!  Great job.  Nice image.

What a treat finding these little guys!  I love their expressive eyes, especially the little fellow in the foreground that looks like he is giving you the stink-eye.enlightened    I have often though how digital technology has changed our lives in so many different ways. I'll always remember the magic I felt when my husband bought our first digital camera, a little Fugi point and shoot. The rest is history.

What an excellent image.  Great eye contact with all three subjects,  Adequate DOF and nice detail for a handheld shot.  I have never tried my 7D2 at 3200, but maybe I should.

Dennis: quite the lineup enlightened Good choice of DOF to get all three faces sharp and the soft light really brings out the black/white striping in the faces. Richard
