I have been off the grid lately, and I missed being here.  I check in occasionally and make a comment when I can.  I shot this of one of our house finches today.  Canon 5D Mark III, Canon 300mm L 2.8 lens with 1.4 teleconverter, at f6.3, 1/640, ISO 160, on tripod and gimbal head, through the window.  Edited in Lightroom and NIK.  Cropped to around 66% of original frame.  Comments and suggestions welcome.

Very good detail, Shirley and the exposure and background are excellent.  If this is a perch you set up, you might shift it so it's more parallel with your focal plane.  Well done.

Hi Shirley,

Glad to have you back. The house finch is nice and sharp and wish that the perch is sharper through the lencth of the picture.  If you have the pixels, try a vertical comp. Well done....................Jim

Nice image of the finch with an excellent background and an interesting perch, Shirley. Your focus point is well chosen. Dennis and Jim have already suggested some improvements. You can also experiment with a smaller aperture that gives you more depth of field. With a higher ISO, you will have a fast enough shutter speed.

Nice clean BG and complimentary colors for this female finch Shirley. I do have a couple of questions. Why shoot through the window? Was it just a quick moment? Or did you plan it that way? I see people sometimes set up things like that and I've found I can sit many times and not even camouflage myself and have plenty of birds come in as long as I am quiet and don't make any quick movements. Also, I see the other suggestions and agree with them all.

Thank you to each of you for viewing and commenting, especially providing suggestions.  I always do appreciate that, it is how we improve.  Because of the direction the bird is looking (mostly towards the oof limb), the vertical view just doesn't work (still includes oof limb in it if I give the bird any space for him to be looking).  To answer your question, Kurt, I have my camera sitting all the time at the window next to my computer.  It is on a gimbal head, and so I have set up a birdbath, feeders, nest box (for bluebirds) to attract birds to this side of our yard.  I can sit here in controlled climate, and working on my computer and watch out the window for activity.  It makes me feel like I am on a photo shoot all the time!  The limb that the finch is on is one that I taped up to a short shepherd's pole not for from the window in hopes of birds perching there for me to get a more natural shot.  Unfortunately, it has quite a curve in this particular limb.  I plan to change limbs later today if I have time, as that one isn't too good for photography.  Again, thank you all, I appreciate it, but I don't see a fix in this photo to get rid of the oof portion of the limb.  I hope to start submitting some photos from a shoot at Huntington Beach State Park in SC that I enjoyed Thursday.  Lots of shots to edit. laugh
