I don't understand why Terns skimmers do this, but it is a blast to witness the taking off and landing and synchronized dipping and turning.

Thanks for the comments on the correct identification.  I just don't know shore birds as well as I know waders!
Technical: D 800 w/ 300 mm f4 and 1.4 TC (420mm), 1/2000 second, f10, ISO 1600, AFC, panning, handheld.

Terrific pano composition. The flying poses of the birds against the blue waters is fantastic. I think their reflections in the water adds a lot to this image. The lighting is also very nice. One small correction - these are skimmers, not terns. Would like to see the techs for this image.

Those all look like Black Skimmers to me.

Maybe because they are Skimmers enlightened - that said, it's always great to see flocks showing this behavior. Well done on the techs and the panorama-crop enhance the feel of the image for me. Almost like a drawing of the famous Escher. Cheers, Hans

A very neat flock image, Kathy.  I like the long pano crop.

Cool to see such a large flock.  Nicely captured and the pano presentation works well.

very cool image!
I've never seen a flock of skimmers this large, and your catching their take-off is excellent.
Great positions, blue water, and the bit of reflection adds a lot.
the choice of pano crop is also perfect.
well-done!
