From the dock in Maine, it was marvelously surprising to have this Common Loon pop up off the lake bottom and just within the minimum focus threshold of my lens, six feet. His seeing me there must have been equally surprising but with less enthusiasm.

Cool opportunity, Dave.  Nice plumage detail and I love the eye.

Really pretty and detailed subject. Really crowded in the frame, but you probably had no choice.

What an opportunity and good presence of mind to take advantage of it, Dave!  I don't believe I've ever seen a photo of a loon with this much detail in the feathers and eye.  Since you were shooting with a zoom lens at 400 mm, I'm wondering if you got a shot of the whole bird at the 200 mm end of the zoom.

I'd bet the next shot would have required an underwater camera and you probably didn't get a chance to reshoot at 200mm  Love the detail you captured.  You must have really good reaction time to get this shot.
