At Peace in the Pond #1

I was driving to Thompson Pass (Valdez, Alaska) to walk the dogs when I saw this cow moose in a pond near the highway.  Fortunately I had the camera with me and the dogs watched intently but stayed quiet!  She seemed very peaceful as she grazed across the pond but it appears that much of her life was much more dramatic.  It looks like she had a run-in with a brown bear, judging by the huge scars on her hind quarter and the hole in her right rear leg that just barely missed the tendon. Other than being a bit ragged, she seemed to be in decent health though.  More to come in the next post!

Much more presence and detail if viewed large.  Sony a6500, FE100400GSM @ 400mm, ISO-400, f/5.6, 1/1250, hand held.

Excellent capture, Gary.  I like the striding pose and the choice of composition, catching the water circles and just enough vegetation all around to anchor the scene.  Her coloration is particularly interesting to me.  Here she appears almost silver and I have never seen a moose that to my eye was not a pretty dark brown!  The scars are a great point of interest, as well.  I cannot wait to see more of her!

Love this image, Gary.  It is so representative of moose in Alaska, much more so than the slick, big bull moose we standing in ponds reflecting Mt McKinley. cool
How she is in mid-step, the water dripping from her mouth and swirling around her front leg.  And all those scars.  As you say, it all adds up to the life of a moose.  I have a huge amount of respect for them, and this is a great image.

To Lon: this is actually a very common color for moose in Alaska.  It depends on location, time of year, and I also think the health of that individual.  We saw many moose in the Fairbanks area that were the dark, slick color, but it is quite common for moose in the Anchorage and south-central vicinity to have this silvery, rough coat.  Sometimes this rough hair will give way to a darker, slicker coat of hair later in the summer.

Thank you, Genny.  I think her coat color, in this case, probably has a lot to do with her age and a long hard winter.  The good news is that her ribs aren't showing and she wasn't limping or anything.  Speaking of color, you might find my next post interesting also.

She looks like she has seen her way through some hard times and come out with some battle scars, all the while staying in decent shape. You go, girl!crying
