The Glory's Gone
by Philip Hodgkins
These abandoned cars were railroad inspection vehicles for the Copper River & Northwestern railroad, a 196 mile long railroad completed in 1911 to transport bags of copper ore from the Kennecott Copper Mine in the eastern Interior of Alaska, to loading ships in Cordova. The line and the company were abandoned in 1938, due to economic reasons (cheaper copper from Chile). The old mine and processing plant are still there, and are a tourist attraction for those hardy folk who want to drive the 60 mile graded road, or the sissies who can afford to fly in to the local air field. Naturally, we drove in (couldn't afford the airplane trip!). We got a nice flat tire about 3/4ths of the way in, from a miniature spike with the number 1916 on the top. I found out later that it was an inspection spike for the RR maintenance crews, indicating where the yearly maintenance ended.
The inspection vehicles are still parked where they were left at Chitina, Alaska.
Thanks for looking, reading and any comments/critiques.
