This was probably the second easiest bird to photograph in Nome.  They were all over the place, and weren't too skittish.  We shot them the first evening we arrived, though this one was taken on our last day of shooting-the first time we found one on the snow.

7Dii, Sigma 150-600 C @ 600 mm, hand held braced on car window, f/8, 1/200, iso 2000, aperture priority, pattern metering, +1 1/3 EV.  Processed in LR & PS CC.  Cropped to 13.4 MP.  I used Topaz Detail to bring out feather texture in the bird, and separately, snow texture in the foreground.

Dennis: there is truth in the acronym KISS or keep it simple stupid ( and the stupid doesn't refer to you). This very simply composed scene brings out the coloration and detail in this pretty little bird. It's also good to see the little guys get their due. Richard

Hi Dennis,

Large view is a must see.  Colors on the longspur are ideal and I like the snow based comp.  No nits from me and I'd print this one for the wall...........................Jim

Simply Awesome Dennis!

I really like this simple but rare image of a migratory song bird on the snow. Wish it was mine!

Fine details in a very tricky exposure.  Superb capture and composition.

Beautiful and generally cooperative birds - nice pose here, fine detail, and the snow texture and it's texture adds a lot.
Well done!
