“Turn Back Time” (unreleased) © 2010

A project I was working on years ago. Was lucky to be able to access this vantage point back then and considering the change in technology now would love to revisit this idea.  20 minutes of time over historic Hanalei.

Aloha!

Aaron, you did very well at balancing the manmade lights with the star field.  The arc of Hanalei bay works well and location of the North star (center of rotation) balances well with the lights.  I'm not sure that camera technology has improved enough to change how a view like this would work.  Yes, you could get less noise in the dark parts of the sky, but I don't see much of that at NPN image sizes.  I don't think that camera dynamic range has changed much, so the few blown highlights would stay blown, unless you went to multiple exposure blending for the manmade lights.

Thanks Mark....there is a LOT of issues at full rez in the sky.  This was a single 20min exposure (with LENR on) and it's pretty iffy.  Could probably get a 45" print out of it but not sure I could do my full 60".  Otherwise I would be able to get more detail out of the shadows/cleaner as this was with a canon.  That being said I find it mostly acceptable as is but there is always cleaner :)

Very cool, Aaron.  I like the combination of city lights and star trails.  I have not had the patience for night photography, and I admire your vision in putting this together.

The long exposure works very well with the star trails, smooth water and urban light.

Love the colors and the swirl of stars in this. If you hadn't identified the location, I could have said it looks like the bright lights of a big city. Since I just started doing some night photography, I'd like to know more of the technical details of this. What ap, lens, etc?
Thanks.
