Mordor

"Mordor" (unreleased) © 2009

With all the craziness of the on-going eruption over on Hawai'i Island I decided to dive back in to the only time I have photographed lava back in 2009. While the experience itself was mind-blowing, my abilities with the camera back then were quite limited so that an entire evening of photography only left me with a handful of shots. In reexamining the collection I found 2 images that had potential. This one here looks like a mountain range in miniature. Hope that I have the opportunity again to capture this amazing subject and my condolences to the people effected by the most recent flows.

Actually quite good, Aaron. I like the exposure for the brights, and the diagonal flow at the bottom gives it a sense of scale and context.

This is awesome, Aaron.  Sometimes time makes the difference in seeing the possibility.  I love the abstract quality of this.

'Cool' abstract. It does look like a lava flow and yet there is a touch of evil suggested by the dark arms coming in from the right. Nice work. The blown out highlight can be easily fixed.

Thanks all

@bill - i'll have to go back to the original for sense of scale actually...the whole scene is quite small relative to how large it feels it could be :)

@ml - that's a quote if i've ever heard one...<3

@igor - nothing to be fixed here.  shooting this is incredibly difficult, especially with cameras 10 years ago.  blown highlights and clipped blacks arent always a bad thing ;)

Way cool (pun intended)!  Love the sense of a mountain range leading off into the distance and the touches of glow.

Fascinating Aaron.  This does looks like some super-duper infrared landscape of little mountain ridges. And the lack of scale here really adds a great deal of mystery to this.  Well done, glad you pulled this out of the archives.

Love this.  I agree with all of the above comments.  It is amazing as well as super scary at the same time.  Just imagine when most of the Earth looked like this!

Aaron: Aptly titled and superbly captured. Hard to gauge the scale which is a good thin for me. Congrats on the WP.>=))>
