Dippers or water ouzels are unique birds adapted for life along swift moving creeks and rivers. We met a birder who told us about the dippers of Spearfish Canyon, South Dakota.  He was a nice guy and learned that he was raised in Michigan and worked a handyman and artist. He was very knowledgeable about the birds of the canyon.
This population represents the eastern most breeding population in North America.  The birds use nesting boxes placed under bridges and the population has been growing.  Color banding enables researchers to track longevity, breeding success, and territory sizes for individual birds tracked through time. K5 IIs 300 mm f4 (1/15 sec at f7.1, Iso 800). Dfine2 for details, levels, color balance, shadows & highlights, crop for comp...........................Jim

Nice job on the dipper and a nice story to go with it, Jim.
