Namibian Bird

Location Living Desert of Namibia, north of Swakopmund
Equipment Nikon D800 Lens 600mm Tamron
Settings ISO 100 f6.3 1/200th second
The name of these tiny birds escapes me. But they had an attitude. This was taken on a small sand dune brush. The birds are about the size of an index finger so wanted to give him some size given his attitude.

Hi Jan:

This image looks very muted.  The overall image is quite dark.

I took a quick look at the image and the histogram and made adjustments based on that.  I'm posting the results of this to see if this looks more like the bird you saw and how the image looks on your screen.

Is your monitor calibrated with a hardware calibration device?

Too dark for me. Keith's response below certainly shows the path to a cure.

First of all, welcome to NPN, Jan!  I had missed any of your previous posts. It is a beautiful bird, and a great pose.  I do agree that it appears much too dark on my screen as well, but the edit that Keith posted certainly improved that on my screen.  I am looking forward to seeing more of your photos.

Hi Jan, I think this is most likely a Tractrac Chat, as Keith said it's underexposed a fair bit.  If you are shooting this in manual, raising your iso would have lightened it up.  devil

Welcome to the avian forum, Jan.  Sorry I'm so late weighing in on this as I've been out of town with limited internet access the last few days.  I agree that the initial post is rather dark.  Some simple adjustments in exposure and contrast can fix that.  Detail in the bird looks very good. and I like the pose.  It does seem a bit tight in the frame for my personal taste, but that's just my point of view.

Welcome! Especially great to have more women here!
Very nice pose and perch for this fellow. Quite dark, but that has been addressed. Very nice detail, too.
Looking forward to more of your work - you clearly have a good eye, and a bit of tweaking work  in Photoshop - easy to learn - will produce a great benefit in lots of great images.

Sandy.
