Autumn Storm

I hope you don't mind some more fall color in spring.  With my work commitments it's difficult to take time off in the spring so I don't have much in the way of seasonal images to share.

This is a photo that I took a few years ago that has been marinating on my hard drive for a while.  This was taken in Cades Cove in GSMNP as a storm passed through the mountains.  I liked the drama in the sky and the backlighting in the trees.  I cropped this to panoramic format because the foreground grasses are not very interesting.

I'm also curious for those of you who shoot panoramic shots do you generally just crop to panoramic format or do you shoot and stitch multiple shots.  I have an interest in shooting panoramics from time to time, but the support gear that is needed to deal with parallax is too expensive for my budget.
As always, all comments and critiques are welcome!  crying

Capture Info:
70 mm
f/8 @ 1/400 sec.
ISO 100

Processing Info:
TK's luminosity masks, cropped to panoramic format.

What a wonderful scene, Brian. You sure captured some great conditions with fantastic light and fall colors. The clouds and haze in the background really adds a wonderful touch to the beautiful foreground trees. Love that light!! Very nice processing as well.

I like the clouds and the layers in this. It feels like one of those autumn days that you want to last forever. As Nick said, the light in this is so sweet!

The dappled light works form me Brian.  I rarely shoot panoramics but love them when well done as yours is.

Brian, this is a beautiful pano. The long layers lend themselves well to the format. I love the spotlights breaking through the clouds onto the beautiful fall colors. The only thing I recommend is a slight crop off the left to remove that brightly lit patch of grass on the edge, which pulls my eye quite a bit.

I've only shot a few panoramas, but I find that with a small degree of camera rotation, the distortion is acceptable to me. I try to keep the highest resolution possible, so I would go for a stitch over cropping down.

I like the spotlighting on the trees and field, and the light through the sky.  Processing looks good.  Might crop in a tiny bit on the left to rid the bright spot on the lower left edge.
