Welcome to the Avian Gallery, Jan.  I think you'll find it a pretty friendly group and a good place to learn and improve your skills.  This is a nice first post.  I really like the mood created by the back lighting and the mist rising from the pond.  The light coming through the bill is particularly nice.  On the negative side, the bird could be a little sharper and there's quite a bit of noise in the shadowed areas of the egret.  You didn't mention your iso, but either that or increasing the brightness in processing could have caused the noise.  Also, if you're not saving your images as RAW files in the camera, you should start doing so.  The camera's conversion to jpeg throws away a lot of information that can be very useful in the processing phase.

If your neighbor will let you, a pop-up blind works wonders for letting you get close to the subjects.

Welcome again.  I look forward to seeing more of your work.

Hi Jan

Very nice photo of this back lit bird.  I do agree with Dennis's suggestions and would add that the dark area at the top of this photo draws my eye away.  I think the photo would be stronger if you cropped that dark area off.

Just came through Nebraska.  Some great birding areas there !
