Lament

This is a photo that I took in 2015.  It was only my second year to be out in the Smokies for fall color season, but there were several people who told me it was a banner year for color.  With scenes like this, I certainly couldn't argue with them.  This image was captured from the Newfound Gap Road looking toward Mt. LeConte.

The title is a reference to the fact that this area was badly damaged the following year from the Chimney Top fires that eventually caused so much devastation in Gatlinburg.  The burn scars in this area are quite severe and I imagine it will take years to recover.

As always, all comments and critiques are welcome!  crying

Capture Info:
102mm
f/8 @ 1/160 sec.
ISO 400

Processing Info:
Levels adjustment to set black and white point, TK's luminosity and saturation masks.  Color balance adjustment.

This is really nice, Brian. I like the composition with the mountains coming down from each side forming that nice V. The fall colors look great and I love what the fog has done for the scene. Very nice work! I have a good friend that did a wonderful book about the Smokies and it has lots of great photography in it. This makes me want to get there even more! cool

Nick, you would love shooting in the Smokies.  It is beautiful any time of the year, but I still love the autumn color the most.  If you do have an opportunity to go sometime feel free to reach out to me.  I would be glad to share some suggestions.

Brian, this is a very nice fall scene. I've never been to the Smokies, but this certainly looks like a banner fall color year for anywhere! I'm on the fence regarding the bits of mist in the left foreground. I'm wishing for more bits of mist across the scene or none, but I do understand that may not have been possible.
