Woodpecker

I am not the best at ID of birds yet, but I believe this is a male Yellow-bellied Sapsucker woodpecker.  He has the red throat as well as the red top of his head, and the yellow underside, but also on his back.  There was lots of sap coming out of this tree as well, where he had been boring.

I took this yesterday at our neighbor's farm.  Shot handheld with Canon 7D Mark II, 100-400 mm L lens, at f5.6, 1/1500, ISO 200. Cropped down to about 62% of original, as well as straightened a little.  Normal editing otherwise (shadows, highlights and minor sharpening because I shoot in RAW).  Comments and suggestions are welcome.

Hi Shirley,

Your ID is correct. The bird is nice and sharp and your techs are spot on.  Not an ideal pose and the bird would have been in a better spot for a photo if it was closer to the ground, but its always good when you snag a new species. Well done.........................Jim

As Jim says, not an ideal pose but you got everything the bird gave you. Nice work.

The Jims pretty much said it, Shirley.  An excellent job given the location of the bird.  Hopefully you'll be able to go back and find it in a better location.
