Siletz River

The coastal range of Oregon in winter is so beautiful, and for some reason I find it so hard to pull that out with a camera. Here’s an attempt from last week.

Nikon D7100
Nikon 18.0-70.0 mm f/3.5-4.5 at 34.0 mm (51.0 mm equivalent; cropped)
1/4 sec at f/905 and ISO 100
I've cloned out some branches that crowded the scene

John, there is a wonderful subtlety to your image for me. I think your attempt was really successful! The b&w presentation confines the scene to the essential points aptly in my opinion.

Thanks for sharing this serene wintry scene.

John, I think you did very well capturing the beauty of this place and time. You have great, silvery tones in your b&w conversion, and the fine dusting of snow on the trees adds a lot of interest.

As an alternate to this, I could see adding some contrast to just the trees on the opposite shore, just to where the land ends at the curve of the river, but I think that this conveys the mood of the place perfectly as presented.

Wonderful mood created by this black-and-white image with a really good reflection and everything fading into the fog or clouds at the end of the river.  Yes it is very difficult to capture the essence of such a scene but I think you have done a good job.

John, The larger version really does it! I think you did a wonderful job capturing the mood of this winter day. I really do think capturing and processing the conditions of a day like this can be quite difficult but you made it look easy here. I like this a lot!

Something about these foggy scenes that are intriguing.  As a possibility, maybe try more of a square aspect by cropping off the left third, as I find the right 2/3 has more mysticism.

Well you certainly pulled it out this time, John. This has a lovely peaceful mood that I find rather inviting and I love the light fog and the way it teases the viewer and gives you a hint of the BG. My only suggestion; and this is being rather picky; would be to clone or crop out the LRC as those lighter areas in the water draw my eye just a bit. Either way this is lovely.

Well seen and captured. I just wish there was just a miniscule more contrast to the BG trees. Just a very subtle adjustment. Course. maybe it's my bad eyesight. Still love it.

I like this image very much.  It is tonally subtle and really conveys the stillness, almost muteness of winter on the river.  The vague shapes of the forest through the mist is very evocative.  Well done, indeed.

Whenever I see a post from John Williams, the word "epic" usually comes to mind....  I wouldn't call this one epic, but most certainly this is a beautiful, peaceful and even serene winter scenic.  Really love how the trees in the bg are obscured by the fog - just a hint of a background.

While I like the symmetry of the reflection, I think an option here would be to crop the brighter areas of the reflection at the bottom.

Glad you pulled out the camera for this winter beauty.
