Killdeer

I hit the crane pools an hour before dawn my first morning at Bosque last month.  After the cranes had flown out and I was walking back to the cars, I noticed a group of at least five of these tucked away in the grass between the parking area and the pond, presumably waiting for the universe to warm up a bit- at least they showed no inclination to move.  I only noticed a couple of other photographers who seemed interested in the.  It's amusing how focused people get on a single species.

7Dii, Sigma 150-600 C @ 562 mm, hand held, f/7.1, 1/2000, iso 800, manual exposure.  Processed in LR & PS CC.  Cropped to 6 MP.  Taken December 12th at 7:53 am.

Your comments and critiques are always appreciated.

Thanks,

I like this as posted. It really shows a lot about the Bosque del Apache xperience. Yes, I am always surprised how so many photographers line up for the Sandhill Cranes but never seem to look at most of the other species and sights at the refuge.

One of my favorite subjects.  I do not recall ever seeing one so puffed up!  This shows it very well.  Thanks for sharing.

Nice color , light and detail. I can never get these guys to sit still long enough to get a good image.

Well taken. That whole experience at the Bosque (I've been near there, but never had the time for any photography), is similar to what I go through here in the 4 or 5 wildlife refuges near me. I tend to stick to the raptors and wading birds, but every now and then I try to get the songbirds, if I can get the little guys to hold still long enough!

You did well to catch the bird in the open, considering the cover available to it.

I also enjoy photographing Killdeer.  This is an excellent image with good detail and color.  I like the setting.  Although we have these in Washington State, they rarely seem to find the appropriate location for photography.  They seem to like my driveway.
