Simpson Reef Seascape

This is a view from the Simpson Reef overlook located south of Shore Acres State Park in Oregon taken last October.  Trying to get better results using my 10 stop N. D. filter, I was happy to find that I was finally able to get a reasonably sharp image of this rocky coastline along with a softer look to the incoming waves.  I removed several small distracting twigs in the lower right corner.

The water does have a nice wispy look to it. I'm wondering if you found a comp with more of the coastal rocks and surf without the trees of the upper right?  They seem a little too dominant if you wanted to showcase the surf and shore.  The water seems quite saturated, caught my attention at first look.  Also, a dust spot in the left upper corner.  I think the filter will suite you well for future images.

I like the wispy look of the incoming waves that the ND filter has created, Paula. Did you happen to get any images of just the crashing surf and rocks? I think the FG cliff and trees take some of the spotlight from the surf which is the star of the show IMO. Good luck with the filter. I might have to look into getting one for myself.

Paula,

I think the effect of the long exposure works well here; typically we only see the longer exposures on more intimate/close up captures of water and surf. I would agree with Harry that the blues - primarily in the ocean are a bit saturated. But honestly, not by too much.  The whites in the surf are nice and white so I think the overall color balance is great.

I would also agree with other comments that the trees in the UR are a bit heavy.  Outside of other captures you may have, you might try and squeeze some luminosity in those trees; it's mostly the darkness that takes away from the lovely ocean-scape.

I think the success of the large ND and exposure depends on two things with your image - one, the large waves, allowing for that wispy effect, and second the rocks in the water to break things up - no rocks, and the long exposure would be much less effective.
