Bosque Tree

Bosque del Apache NWR, NM
Date: December 11, 2017, 11:52 am
Equipment: Nikon D7000, AF-S DX Nikkor 18-140 f/3.5-5.6G ED VR @34mm, from car window
Exposure: ISO 400, Aperture priority matrix meter, 1/320th @ f/16
Raw, PS CC 2017 on Mac, 93% of full frame (cropped bottom only)

I managed a full day at Bosque del Apache this month before needing to get back to Phoenix. As usual I drove the loops and shot from the car window rather than hang out for the cranes and geese. I find the brown trees there very interesting and I always look for opportunities to photograph them in addition to all the birds.

I picked up this gently used Nikon D7000 and a refurbished 18-140 to cover the point-and-shoot realm; it lets me avoid swapping lenses on my other cameras in the dusty conditions at the refuge.

Hi Richard,

The diagonal of blue sky makes this shot successful for the centered composition. Pleasing color scheme and the low horizon strengthens the comp.....................Jim

Cool tree and scene. Maybe could use a little CW rotation? I think it would be fun to convert this to B&W and see where it goes. It appears to have the right ingredients. Sure is a grand tree and a fine image of it.

I think this is a beautiful image.  The tree is actually not centered, in my opinion.  The trunk is a little to the right of center and the branches are a lot to the left of center.  I think if you chopped off the branches to make them even all around, then it would be almost completely centered and probably not very interesting.  As it is, it is fascinating and is an image I could look at for a very long time.
