Bosque First Evening

After settling in when I arrived at Bosque a on the 11th, I had just enough light left to take a run down and check out the action at the crane pool.  The sun was down by the time I got there, but I decided to blow some electrons on the late arrivals anyhow.  I'm not usually a big fan of blurs, but when I was reviewing files, I liked this one, so I decided to process it.  The bird was ill placed, so I trimmed a fair amount off the right and added an equal amount on the left using content-aware crop.

7Dii, Sigma 150-600 C @ 600 mm, hand held, f/11, 1/15, iso 500, shutter priority, pattern metering, -1/3 EV.  Processed in LR & PS CC.  Content aware crop ending up at essentially full frame.  I also increased saturation and did a touch of warming to bring up the sunset color.

Comments and critiques are always appreciated.

Thanks,

I like it, Dennis.  Subtle colors and lines in the background, and a good wing position really make for a nice frame.

You were mighty bold, shooting that big honker at 1/15!sad Seriously, for a blur, it is very artistic. My only suggestion (as an after the fact critiquer) would have been to pan a little quicker and hope for at least something in focus.blush

The comp and colors are great here Dennis.  I would either go for a little quicker shutter speed (like 1/60 or so) to possibly get the head in better focus or an even slower speed (down around 1/5 you often get an interesting kind of double expsoure). devil

Dennis, I have lots of these types of images from Bosque that I review and often set aside. For me it's fun to play around in those areas to see how they can be presented. In this image, focus is comparatively good on the head while allowing the rest to go soft. After all, you are shooting hand held at 600 mm and 1/15th. And I'm not convinced that any significant shooting settings would improve the overall aesthetic of this, although a little boost in brightness might help.

Even though this is a blur, it is much better appreciated by viewing the larger version.  It's so close to being in focus, though, that I find myself thinking how beautiful it would have been in focus.

Dennis: this is really a very pleasant departure from the sharpness we all generally strive for. One minor nit would be to remove the straight line (power line?) above ground level. Richard
