Meet Ian!  Ian is a very delightful old fellow who sits by the side of the road in Brookings  EVERY DAY - rain or shine -   for 2 hours in the morning and 2 hrs in the evening, waving and calling to every commuter and kid on the way to school. He is pretty much an icon.
He is very animated and not still for a second. He says he is "somewhere around 77, I don't exactly remember" and has been "bringing joy and laughter to people for years. You can't take life seriously, or you will get depressed."
As a retired public health nurse, I usually stop for people like this and gently see if they can use any help.
Ian was a delightful exception - he has a nice, safe little house,  his daughter moved in to help him, he loves having her and his 4 grandkids there. He is a retired (very) high-level executive with an international company and loves everything.  He has no dementia at all, no major health problems,  is very well-spoken on a wide range of topics, nicely-dressed, eats well, and enjoys every day.

Hi Sandy,

He looks like quite a character.  A good scene and I hope that his meet and greets continue safely..........................Jim

What a happy way to start my day.  I've had the pleasure of visiting Brookings several times and have waved to Ian as we drive by on our way to Harris Beach State Park.  How many of us can say we bring a smile to someone's face on a daily basis?  Ian can!  And your gesture, Sandy, of stopping to check on him says everything about who you are.  From one nurse to another I have to say "you rock"!
