California Quail

While working at Cal Tech, I took an afternoon, sunset drive on Highway 2 in the mountains above Pasadena into the San Gabriel Wilderness and was pleasantly surprised to fine that I had the Mt Wilson area all to myself. This is such a beautiful area to explore. Came across this female California Quail sunning herself on a large rock formation and she was a very cooperative subject indeed. Hand held, 75% of full frame.

Great pose, colours, and BG.
Love the raised foot!
From here, quite a bit of noise in the BG - easily corrected.
Fine work!

Love that complimentary background. The techs look very good. A little more room, especially at the top and bottom, would improve this image IMHO. Well done.

Hi Mike, I like this one as posted. The tightness in this doesn't bother me at all. I did see Sandy say she say a bunch of noise in the BG. I am not seeing any myself, so not sure what is happening there? Especially using ISO 400 on the DXM2, I don't get much noise at ISO 6400.

It is a great looking shot, Mike.  I too love the colors of the background complimenting the colors in the bird.  I too see some noise in the background, but I also see what appears to be one dust spot over on the right hand side in the background.  Otherwise, an awesome image, with great detail in the subject!

A well composed image.  I like the glow of the background (and I don't see any noise to speak of).  The general color scheme of the quail nicely mirrors the background.  Terrific pose, including the head turn.

A simply beautiful portrait Mike. Great pose  you captured of the quail and extremely sharp. But, the background color is what puts this one over the edge for me.

Sweet One!

Wow, very nice image, Mike. The BG colors are as much adding to the image as the Quail.. Lovely, complimentary colors. devil, Cheers, hans

A sweet pose with excellent detail and a perfect bg for the colors of the bird, Mike.  I'm not seeing the noise Sandy mentions.  Well done.
