Real nice color and layering. I am on the fence about the top red leaves coming in. I find they are a bit of a visual barrier from the front foreground to the back. Overall, nice image.

Ian, A wonderful wooded scene with a nice mix of color. I especially like the forest floor covered in leaves like a carpet and that foremost birch log on the ground is a nice touch for me.

Woodland scenes are always hard for me to compose, but you have succeeded rather nicely here, Ian. This has a nice earthy feel to it. I am not sure about the brown leaves coming in from the top; did you happen to get any images without them? As Nick already mentioned the fallen birch is a nice touch.

Ed ( and Harley ) : thanks for the comments - much appreciated  I did take this tighter view but preferred the sense of space in the first version.  The trail of brown leaves I hoped, in this particular case, might set off the fall of the lower green leaved branches.

I'd be interested in any views on the comparison.

I much prefer the repost. I find the composition flows nicely and for me it better emphasizes the great spread of leaves on the forest floor. Very nicely done!

Ian,

While I understand the comment about the red leaves up top, I see what you're seeing in terms of the open space, and I think that is more about what this image represents than the leaves.  In fact, the large spread of green leaves don't stand out very well against the rest of the forest; but having the wider view I think helps a lot with the rest of the foliage. If that makes sense.

I think you nailed it with the repost, Ian. The repost contains all the wonderful things from the original like the leaf litter, the greens of the surrounding trees along with the fallen birch. Nicely done.

Beautiful forest scene.  The contrast between the carpet of brown leaves and green on the trees works well here.  I prefer the repost, although I do like the openness in the original.

Ian, especially the repost makes for a consistent presentation of the scene to me. I especially like the kind of horizontal flow given by the branches and foliage in the middle part of the image.

One purely technical aspect I wanted to mention: I think there is a visible chromatic aberration, which could easily be fixed with your processing software.
