This is a mixed woodland, planted in the 18th century on a bare sandstone escarpment.  The area was extensively mined for copper from prehistoric times up to the Roman period and, occasionally, beyond.  The deep cutting in the centre of the image dates from the Roman period.

The greens and yellows in this view glow beautifully, Ian.  Except for the "big ditch", the area seems to have recovered very well.  The history adds a lot to this fine view.

Ian, thanks for your posting comments with this...the image has the feel of an old school oil painting. I like the textures in the grasses and the old diggings and especially the light  on those wonderfully reaching tree limbs. Bet you were pleased to get such a good sky for this image.

Thank you for posting this Ian. This has so many really great features, not to mention the historical significance. I love the brooding sky, the wonderful fence line, the fall colors, and the composition wraps it all together in a nice package. Well done.
