Rock Sawn Plus Recrop

This was taken in the Kootenay National Park in Canada in 2008 after devastating fires had ripped through huge swaths of forest there. I am thinking this is from severe cold, but am not sure of the causation of this unusual split in the rock.  It is fascinating regardless of the cause. Canon 40D, f11, 1/50 sec, iso 400, 17-85 IS lens at 47 mm, cropped to landscape from vertical to emphasize the rock vs. burned forest. Thank you for your comments and critiques.

The strong, jagged edge of that split is both dramatic and unusual, Ed.  While cold might be responsible, I'm wondering about heat from the fire.  I like the touches of color in the vegetation at the top and the chilly blue water.

You are likely right Mark. I have seen small rocks that have been split by fire too.

Amazing find! I might have focused in more closely on the zig zag and beautiful turquoise water, but still it is a good one to post for the weekly challenge.

Thank you Kathy. With your comment I decided to try a recrop to focus more on the rock at least. This gets more into the "art" part of the weekly challenge since I have turned it on its side to focus on the jagged jaws of rock.

Ed, this is amazing!  I've never seen anything like that in nature.  It looks like the pattern carries through into the deeper rock. As far as cropping, I'd like something between the two.  Great find!

Hi Ed,

That crack is awesome--very sawtooth like. A very unusual composition and I think that your cropped version  is more conventional than the original.  You may want to crop a bunch off the left to get a square format which would de-center the crack and let the diagonals of the right push the eye into the jagged features of the crack.  As is, the original fits into this Weekly Challenge and I like this one over your cropped version.  Well done.........................Jim

Ed, I passed over this earlier but glad I came back and read your comments. That's pretty cool, and amazing that it produced near perfect "shark teeth". That bright blue water looks good with the cooler hues of the rock.
