Austral Pygmy Owl

During my May tour in Chile, we were fortunate to see a few different pygmy owls.  I kept hoping to find one perched amid the incredible autumn colors that were blanketing Torres del Paine and the surrounding countryside that week... and we finally got one.  This little fellow was perched near the road, in a grove of mixed colors.

Naturally, I wanted to get the subject lined up in front of the brightest patch of red foliage, but that proved to be very difficult.  I had to stand on the side of our SUV, awkwardly hand-holding my lens over the roof in order to achieve the proper angle.  I mistakenly thought I had the right settings (i.e., enough shutter speed) to get a few sharp shots while holding the big lens in an unstable position, but I was dead wrong.  By the time I figured out I should've bumped up the ISO, the owl had switched perches.  Pretty much the entire sequence was a tick soft.  Though the images were good enough for web use, I figured they were a lost cause... until a client mentioned the Shake Reduction filter in PhotoShop CC (which I've just switched over to).  This was the perfect scenario for trying out that tool... and it actually kinda did the trick.  Now I consider this image semi-acceptable. enlightened

Semi-acceptable? I would say totally awesome. Love the background and the stare. Well done.

Fantastic background.  Nice pose and perch and I like the look he's giving you.  I love the background and it compliments the owl nicely, but it also tends to overwhelm the small owl, so I could also see this with a crop from the right.

Interesting, Max.  This looks quite good and I can see why you were trying for this background, it's gorgeous.  It would be really interesting if you could post a version without the shake reduction filter applied.

I'm intrigued by the unconventional framing, which adds interest for me. The details, color and pose are excellent.

Wonderful photo Max!
Love the brilliant colors and the reflected light on the owl.
Oh....and that obvious attitude of this little owl is an obvious bonus!

Excellent image Max. Outstanding colors and unusual composition works very well. Although I suppose a vertical would have been effective too. Lots of cropping options.

I totally love everything about this.  The background colors make this particular composition so very appealing.

How wonderful...colors and detail!   And the use of so much negative space makes him appear quite diminutive. ...which I assume, was the point.
The BG is amazing!  What a color palette!!!

Thanks, everyone.  Dennis, I don't believe posting the alternate version would show you anything different.  The difference may be more noticeable with the print res. file, but the web res. file would look pretty similar.

This is a pretty striking image when considering the color palette, the skeletal perch, and of course the main subject, which blends in so beautifully with the background.  Despite any potential technical difficulties you had in getting the image, you have succeeded quite well in its presentation.  Nice job Max!

I am getting goosebumps! The bg alone is a winner, and to add to that you have this lovely owl sitting on a near-perfect perch! devil

Such an excellent photo, I love everything about it.  Congratulations on the WP, well deserved!

Also, thank you for the technical explanation, I plan to try that filter tool!
