Anna's hummingbird

The light is a little flat on this one but it was very dark.  The feeder hangs under a trellis which contributes to even more darkness.  On a sunny day, the background, which is about 75 yards away is bright; not so on the day that this was taken.  So all the light came from the single flash.  Distance from camera lens to the hummingbird is approximately 12 feet.  The detail and the lack of noise at iso 8000 is reasonable.  Yes, there is noise in the dark areas and in the blurred wings but not too bad all considering.

iso 8000, 200-500 at 500, f8, 1250th, full frame, D500, small part of feeder cloned away, heavy overcast, -0.3 EV, fill flash at 0, DxO Optics Elite 11, ACR 10, Topaz Adjust & DeNoise at moderate, TK sharpening action at 50%

"The detail and lack of noise at iso 8000 is reasonable."  No kidding!!  This looks really good.  The detail came out well and the wing detail seems more related to motion blur than noise.  I like the background and really can't discern much noise (is this due more to the Topaz DeNoise than the camera's ability to capture a good shot at iso 8000?)  My only nit would be, that for me, the hummer seems a bit too close to the left side.

Wow!  I thought you used to complain about the noise you were getting from the D500?  This is gorgeous from any iso setting and utterly amazing for 8000.  The bird is tack sharp and the noise is almost unnoticeable.  That's one gaudy bg.

The noise reduction is primarily DxO Optics Pro Elite's Prime denoising engine which I have found to be utterly amazing.  I make two other adjustments.  I set the masking option in ACR to 20 under sharpening and I used Topaz De Noise at the moderate preset only for a tiny little boost.  That is all I did.  Of course, getting the correct exposure in the first place is rather important.  And once again this is the whole full frame with a small amount of the feeder clone away using the patch tool in PS CC.

I like the detail in the bird and the color contrast is very nice.

500 mm? 12 feet away? Single flash? The detail for ISO 8000 reasonable? More like remarkable! Beautifully presented and processed, David. I agree that de-centering toward the left or a crop from right would be better. Thank you for posting.

Amazing to have so little noise at ISO8000... for some reason I never get that enlightened. Wonderful setting and colors. Great job, best, Hans

Outstanding detail and colors David. My only nit is it seems very centered in the frame. Very cool capture!

The BG color here gives a magnificent platform for this beautiful hummer. Congrats on the well deserved WP David.
