This forked horn mule deer buck was at the Tulelake National Wildlife Refuge with four of its friends. This buck seemed really huge for a forked horn and the antlers were really wide set. The other four bucks with it included a four by six, a four by five, a three by four and a three by three. This buck actually seemed bigger than a couple of the other bucks that had a higher point count. I was intrigued by this buck as it carefully placed its front legs on the rock to get better access to the willow leaves higher in the tree. Thanks for your thoughts and suggestions. I know the branches make this very busy, but you take what you get sometimes.

Canon 5Diii, f7.1, 1/1600 sec, -0.7 EV, 100-400 ISL ii, with 1.4 X TC at 348 mm, slight crop from sides to get 9X12.

Quite the pose, Ed, with him braced like that on the rock as he munches the leaves.  Nice job getting a clear view of his eye in the midst of all of those leaves and branches.  You really have to go to the larger view to appreciate this image.

This gives a better look at the set of horns this guy had. Really wide for any forked horn buck that I have ever seen.

Interesting subject, for sure.  Usually that much busyness is a big distraction...but here it is cool as it is somehow part of the the story.
