Chestnutbacked Chickadee
by Dennis Plank
I finally got back out to my blind today after putting up a covered feeder area in front of it a few weeks ago. I put up a 6 foot by 6 foot white translucent roof mostly to reduce the amount of food wastage we get with the winter rains around here. The birds seem to have taken to it quite nicely as I had ten or twelve species there today including large numbers of both our chickadee species, House Finches and Pine Siskins and lesser numbers of the others. My perch system is still pretty crude, but I'll work on it over the next few weeks. It's probably not clear in the size of image I can post, but the somewhat odd reflection in this bird's eye is the roof structure.
7Dii, Sigma 150-600 C @ 600 mm, Jobu Gimbal mounted to blind window, f/7.1, 1/250, iso 1600, aperture priority, pattern metering, -2/3 EV. Processed in LR & PS CC. Cropped to 15.4 MP before resizing. The bg is senesced prairie. Taken this morning at 9:33 am under mostly cloudy skies.

3 commentsI tried to get one of these birds photographed while out in Oregon. I came close, but nothing like this one. The head is tack sharp with limited DOF. More DOF would be better, but can understand that you had limited lighting. BG is awesome. Well done...............Jim
