Dipper on the Rocks

An American Dipper (Water Ouzel) on the rocks the bay at Valdez, Alaska.  I was shooting photos of Sea Lions when this bird stopped by, quite close, to check me out. They normally keep moving and are quite fast so I haven't been able to get a good shot of them but this time it stayed for a bit and posed like a good model.  I got lots of shots but this is my favorite.

Large is better.

Sony a6500, FE100400GM @ 400mm, ISO-500, f/5.6, 1/1250, hand held.

The larger version is breathtaking.  What a beautiful bird.  I'm so glad you got lots of shots of this one, and especially glad you got this one.

Really nice Gary. The Dipper is nicely lit and stands out well against the rock background. Great detail. One doesn't see very many really good photos of these guys because they are so fast. Well done.

Very nice indeed. I've seen dippers in CA, AZ, and even in NM but don't have much to show for those encounters in photos. I'd be very happy to have taken this.

Outstanding, Gary.  Amazing to see two of these posted in as many days.  Very appropriate bg and superb detail in the bird with a nice pose.  You did an excellent job getting separation from the bg.

Lucky you... love when that happens. Not expecting it and then he sits long enought for you to capture his essence. Great job Gary!

Great picture of a bird that must usually be well hidden against its background habitat.  The separation is very well done and the large version shows it beautifully.

I really like the light on the Dipper here.  The diagonal of the rocks and the opposing position of the bird make this a pleasing composition.

This is a beautiful shot Gary, love the composition and how the dipper's color matches the rock. devil
