Twenty Five Minutes

Nikon D800
Nikon 17-35 @ 28 mm
f 18 @ 5 sec.
ISO 200
3 stops of GND
tripod & cable release
Acadia NP, ME

This comp is slightly different than my last post and was taken twenty five minutes before sunrise. This version has a totally different mood with the cooler tones, but I think it still works as a companion piece.

As always thanks for taking a look and leaving a comment or suggestion.

Ed,

Certainly a much different mood here; definitely cooler.  Also a bit more somber (not sure if that's a proper description though.)  Maybe calmer, quieter works better.  I think I prefer the warmer more colorful version with the sun in it. This one I think is a bit less engaging, although it does have that quiet, calming feel to it.

The rock formations are fascinating.  I'm wondering what things might look like if the rock was warmed up a bit?  Just a thought.

Interesting to compare the two images side by side, Ed. I prefer the previous image, but this one stands on its own. I again especially like the way the clouds match or imic the rocks. I realize this is pre-sunset, but I am wondering how this would look with a slight boost of contrast and brightness.

It's hard to say for sure which version I like better, but this one might have it by just a little bit.  I like the quieter mood of this image as well as the light on the water.  The streaks on the water are interesting as well.  Very nice!

I really liked your previous image, Ed, but I have to say that I love this one.  The streaks of light  penetrating the cloud cover are mesmerizing.  The pre-dawn calmness just permeates this image.  Very nice addition to your previous image.

Hi Ed, I've come back to view this image several times.  The quality of light is amazing, especially that delicate sheen on the water.  One spot I keep coming back to is the left side --that sheen on the water is so wonderful that the shadowed portion of the rock seems a bit jarring to me.  A lot of the composition has very "severe" elements and I almost wish it were either more severe or less so.

Ed, yes, quite a contrast on the two takes here. I always shoot through most of the sunrise cycles even using film like I do. Out of maybe 20 shots I might only find 2 or 3 I really like. In this case I do prefer your warmer previous image. But, I can tell you if they were my own I would have picked the same one as that is how I lean with my film images too.
On the other hand there are those scenes such as this one that can be easily viewed with a more somber tone to it, and this one is perfect for that feeling. So, it depends upon the thought or feel in the end I guess. I like really both for that reason.

This NP sure looks like it has some fantastic stuff. I can see why you and Michael have both had some fine images from here.

This works nicely.  Definitely wanted to take a look once I saw the thumbnail.
