Antarctic Silver-WC 799

This is the one image that came to mind when I read the theme for this week's challenge.  I do not know is there is any particular scientific explanation for the phenomenon I experienced, but it was definitely a "magical " moment for me.  In December, 2012, while sailing off the coast of Antarctica, we experienced a change in the weather as the clouds closed in.  The sky and mountains took on a glow that bathed everything in silvery light and I took several shots of the mountainous islands as we sailed past.

That is really cool light, Paula.  Silver is certainly the word that comes to mind when I look at the hills.  I'm glad you remembered this one.

You've certainly got a fine glisten on the snowy landscape, Paula.  The lighting also shows off the details very well.  I'm intrigued by the track up the far ridge on the left, it looks like someone was snowshoeing with ski poles.

Mark, I had wondered about that myself because the pattern is too symmetrical (and clean) to be part of the penguin "highway". The image was geo-tagged so I looked on Google Earth to find that there are several research bases in the general vicinity so I'm sure that they are tracks from activity on one of the bases.

The light is quite special here.  It accentuates the frozen shapes and textures of this cool landscape in a dramatic way.  Nice composition.  I have seen light like this before while skiing in Colorado.  It is really interesting.  And how special to see it in Antarctica.
