Solar Filters?

We don't need no stinkin' solar filters!  As Jim mentioned, we've been getting a lot of smoke from the British Columbia forest fires.  While this has a bit the look of an eerie moon, it's a direct shot of the sun through the branches of a dead tree.  I did have to bring up the bg quite a bit to get the texture to show better.

7Dii, Sigma 150-600 C @ 600 mm, hand held, f/9, 1/2000, iso 1000, aperture priority, pattern metering, -2 1/3 EV.  Processed in LR & PS CC.  Cropped to a 14 MP 4x5 before resizing.  Taken August 3rd at 6:25 am (sunrise was at 5:15 so the sun was fairly high by this time).

Your comments and critiques are greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

This is very cool!  In fact NPN should have a contest for the most creative solar filter.  The textures and shadows are very intriguing.

The color of the sun is intriguing Dennis. Nice use of your surroundings and nice job bringing some life into the shadow world here.

Amazingly heavy smoke/haze here Dennis, to make the sun this dim.  It would like like a full moon, except that there isn't any structure in the glowing orb.  Adding the shadows was a good idea and certainly adds to the spookiness of the view.

I have shots of the smokey sun both at morning and evening but not with the textured bg you have achieved here. Excellent.
