Taken at the Chicago Botanic Garden's Butterflies and Blooms exhibit.
When I first got it, I really liked the BG, but then started to wonder if it's too much.
Nikon D7200, Sigma 105 macro, f11, 1/100, ISO 500

I like the colorful bg for this beautiful mostly black and white butterfly. The sharpness and detail in the butterfly are excellent.  Very nicely done!

Hi  Dan crying  The  beautiful butterfly  has competition  with  this  colorfull  background         but  everything  seems to  be  in  fine  harmony

Dan this is a fine comp. Love the full frame comp here and fine combination of colors between the bf and the bg. Very well done

This is very eye catching, Dan, with the b&w butterfly against a great collection of flowers.  There good visual drama with the contrast between the bf and the relatively large area of flowers.  The question that I ask myself about an image is, "Would I look at this regularly for years and continue to enjoy the view if it was hanging on my wall."  As I look at this, I'm with you in wondering...the only way to tell is to print it and hang it.

Mark had an interesting take on this. Would repeated viewing cause the interest in this to wane? Personally, I think it would be up to the individual. For me, I would hang it and view it with a little thrill whenever I saw it. There are very few images I have seen that would do that, but this would, at least as viewed and contemplated by other photographers.

Thank you all for your comments.  I think I will go with my original gut reaction.
This was my first outing with my new Sigma 105 macro; I think I am really going to like this lens.

Dan I think the composition and clarity are outstanding. It definitely has a great contrast between the BF and BG. Big version is a must see here.

I guess getting the WP answers your question about it being "too much" !  laugh
Beautiful - fine detail, great colours, full wing opening. Congrats on a fine WP!
