Fox vs Geese WC

This image was taken outside of Deadhorse, Alaska last month while on a "North to South" photo safari, led by Ron Niebrugge.  We were scouting the ponds looking for birds when we noticed a Red Fox running across a meadow toward a pair of White-fronted Geese.  It was difficult to tell if they were on a nest or just defending their territory, but we watched the geese stand their ground as the fox charged.  I was expecting to photograph the carnage, but was amazed to see the fox have second thoughts about his plan of attack as he turned tail and sauntered off.

It looks like a standoff, Paula, with the pair of geese giving that fox "what for".  The threatening poses are clear.  I once used my nephew's head as a brace for a twilight picture, if you can keep your "tripod" from laughing at you, it works pretty well.

Love the drama here Paula. You captured this conflict very well.
